Deconstruction Masterclass: Climate and Environmental Impacts

  • 2022-05-11
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (CDT)
  • Zoom webinar

Deconstruction is the careful dismantling of a structure in order to preserve and reuse building materials. While it helps keep building materials out of the landfill, it also provides important social and cultural context to historic places. Through deconstruction, we can solve many mysteries and tell countless stories! Want to learn more about the benefits and challenges of building deconstruction? Register for Rethos’ free Deconstruction Masterclass

The panels will be held virtually, they are open to the public, and there is no cost to attend. Rethos especially invites building owners, contractors, city staff, heritage preservation commissioners, tradespeople, and policy makers to attend.

It's no secret that building construction and demolition produce lots of waste that ends up in landfills across the  globe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that 600 million tons of construction and demolition waste was generated in the U.S. in 2018; more than twice the amount of household trash! What can we do about it?

Deconstruction is the careful dismantling of a structure in order to preserve and reuse building materials. On top of economic and cultural benefits, deconstruction can reduce our reliance on generating new products, it can reduce exposure to harmful materials like lead and asbestos, and it can capture valuable embodied carbon. Perhaps your community has goals to reduce waste and carbon emissions. Deconstruction can be part of the solution. Want to learn more about the  environmental impacts of deconstruction and how you can help? Get all the details from our panel of Minnesota-based experts with deep knowledge in the field of sustainability and reuse.

Speakers include Matt Rohn, City of Northfield Materials & Waste Workgroup; Jason Burbul, Better Futures; and Tim Roman, Ecotone Analytics.

This panel is the second in a series of three events about the economic, environmental, and cultural value of deconstruction. Sign up for all three webinars to complete this Deconstruction Masterclass! The series is funded by the National Trust Preservation Fund. Each webinar will feature a panel of experts sharing the latest updates in a growing industry. Plenty of discussion and Q&A to follow. The series is open to all. Building owners, contractors, city staff, heritage preservation commissioners, tradespeople, and policy makers are especially encouraged to attend.
